Local amenities

Local amenities are located a five minute walking distance away, there is a small supermarket, an Indian restaurant, fast food take-away and 3 pubs serving food. One of the pubs has an internet availability. Within ten minutes walking, there is Mercadona, Aldi and Champion. In the other direction, ten minutes walk towards the sea, brings you to another Mercadona. The hypermarket, Carrefour is worth a visit and also the shopping centre which is next to it. Most shopping can be done in the local markets, which are definitely worth a look. On a Friday Torrevieja has one of the largest markets in Spain. The Aqua Park is open in the summer months between June and September and is not far from the apartment, (well worth a visit for the youngsters).

The coast

 

There are some lovely places to visit along the coast. Alicante has beautiful beaches with esplanades to stroll along. There are water sports to enjoy as well as numerous restaurants and bars. Further down the coast is Santa Pola, a very pretty Spanish seaside town and fishing port well worth a walk around. Guadamar is a lovely place to visit, with wonderful beaches to sunbathe on. Bars and restaurants are on the sea front at La Mata, which is a popular local beach. The promenade is always a busy place, where you can watch the world go by whilst having a relaxing drink or snack at one of the bars.

 

 The city of Torrevieja ...

....lies about 50 km south west of Alicante. You can reach Torrevieja via the road N 332, a wonderful road along the costa blanca. If you have some time discover the beauty of the area via this road - you will love it's views. Torrevieja marks a kind of language line between the traditional valencian/catalan in the north of the costa blanca and the spanish wide castellano spanish. Further in the south you will find more and more "spanish-only" speaking people, while the area of Torrevieja and upwards is usually more bilingual.

Torrevieja area's salt lakes

The entire area around of Torrevieja and Orihuela are famous for their salt production. Huge salt lakes surround the road down from Alicante.

The city of Torrevieja which get's its name from an old tower (old=vieja ; tower=torre), was first mentioned around 1800. It became famous in 1802, when it took over the salt administration from Orihuela. Apart of the salt industry, tourism and fishing keep the city alive. The harbour gives home to 300 fishing ships and over 900 private sport boats. A wonderful view especially when sun sets.
